Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is Saturday, Oct. 25

Bring harmful wastes form around your home to keep them out of the regular trash, landfill and stormwater system during a special hazardous waste collection event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, which will be at 112 Union St. behind the Farmer's Market in downtown Jackson, accepts hazardous materials that should not be thrown in the regular trash.

The collection site WILL ACCEPT ...

  • Oil-based paint, thinner, stripper, adhesives and other home improvement products.
  • Household cleaners, such as drain and oven cleaners, polishes and disinfectants.
  • Herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and other lawn and garden products.
  • Gasoline, refrigerants, oil and fuel additives, contaminated used oil and other automotive products.
  • Computers, computer parts and other electronic waste (no televisions).
  • Non-alkaline batteries, pool chemicals, aerosols, fluorescent light bulbs and other miscellaneous wastes.
  • Hazardous waste from conditionally exempt small quantity generators by appointment only. Call 615.643.3178.

We WILL NOT ACCEPT ...

  • Latex paint. (Small amounts of latex paint can be dried until solid and thrown away in the regular garbage.)
  • Medical or infectious waste.
  • Radioactive waste.
  • Smoke detectors.
  • Empty containers.
  • Amunition or explosives.
  • Waste from commercial businesses without an appointment.

Remember ...

  • Keep wastes in original containers.
  • Do not mix chemicals.
  • Alkaline batteries no longer contain mercury and can be put in the regular trash.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is sponsored by the City of Jackson’s Stormwater Management Department, Health and Sanitation Department and Keep Jackson Beautiful; All Fiber and Scrap Recycling LLC; and Sunrise Recycling Services.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation provides funding and collection for the event.
